    Our award-winning teacher-preparation program gives students invaluable classroom experience with support from experienced mentors. At the graduate level, our degrees deepen students’ research skills and content knowledge for career advancement. Together, we're making an impact in schools across the region.

    Our graduate programs prepare aspiring principals, superintendents, special education professionals, higher education administrators and other scholars committed to transformative leadership. We also offer undergraduate minors in special populations and Asian-American studies.

    With a focus on improving wellness and quality of life, we offer undergraduate degrees in health and human development and family sciences. We also offer graduate degrees in counseling, counseling psychology, school psychology, and measurement, quantitative methods and learning sciences.

As part of a Carnegie-designated Tier One public research institution, we continue to increase our rigor and relevance to the community.     Joanna Batt earned the award from National Council for the Social Studies for her research, which focused on how recent high school graduates felt their history courses represented — or didn’t represent — their identities.

    Professor’s Docuseries Focuses on Better Schooling for Black Youth

    To shine a light on the challenges facing Black students and to offer solutions, Professor Kmt Shockley directed and produced a five-part docuseries called “Cultural War: Focus on Black Youth,” recently released on the free streaming app Tubi.

    The College’s online master’s degree programs ranked among the nation’s best on the 2024 U.S. News & World Report list. The top placement reflects the credentials of the faculty, effective use of technology, student engagement and more.

    Six undergraduate students in the fall 2023 graduating class earned the recognition of banner bearer for their standout grades. “This moment seemed very far-fetched for me a few years ago, and now here I am!,” said teaching graduate Kassandra Quintana.

    Teaching Students Envision Classrooms of the Future

    Professors Justin Burris and Susie Gronseth worked with UH technology staff to give future teachers an opportunity to design — and then visualize in 3D — their future classrooms. “This project is extending teaching and learning for both faculty and students,” Burris said.

    Research Team Earns $1.9M Grant to Improve Middle School STEM Education

    Jie Zhang, an associate professor of bilingual education, has teamed with science education faculty members Alberto J. Rodriquez and Sissy Wong and educators in Alief ISD on the National Science Foundation grant to design more culturally relevant lessons.

    UH Professor Explores Impact of Stressors on the LGBTQ+ Community

    As discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community has increased, Professor Nathan Grant Smith earned a federal grant to evaluate the impact of stress, looking at biological data and mental health measures.

    $3.3M Grant Supports New Teacher Certification Option

    The program will allow participants to work toward certification and a master’s degree while earning a stipend. “Our Houston community will benefit from the reliable employment pipeline the UH PDEE program will build,” said Associate Professor Jeannette Alarcón, the principal investigator of the UH Partnership to Develop Equity-Minded Educators program.

    High-Quality Alternative Teacher Certification Program Launches

    To address the teacher shortage, the UH College of Education is using a $3.5 million grant from the Houston Endowment to create a high-quality alternative certification program based on key components of the College’s nationally recognized traditional degree program; individuals with bachelor’s degrees are eligible.

Health Professor Norma Olvera received the Revolution Award from the Association for the Recognition of Hidden Talent for her work promoting a healthy lifestyle among the Hispanic community.

Grace Lee, who earned a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction — bilingual/ESL education in 2023, won first place in the Texas Association for Bilingual Education’s 2023 dissertation award competition.

Two-time alumna Emily Messa, who serves as UH’s senior associate vice president for administration, earned the 2023 top service award from the National Association of College Auxiliary Services.

At least nine alumni have won Teacher of the Year (TOY) awards for 2023-24: Jaquelin Alvarez, Kingwood Middle School in Humble ISD (Rookie TOY); Delmi Antunez Valdez, Smith Elementary School in Aldine ISD (Bilingual TOY); Savannah Bridgewater, Foster Elementary School in Humble ISD; Rhaniece Choice, Cummings Elementary School in Alief ISD; Jesus Esparza, DeAnda Elementary School in Houston ISD (Beginning TOY); Caroline Hill, Carolyn and Vernon Madden Elementary School in Fort Bend ISD (Rookie TOY); Asma Mohd, Mission Bend Glen Elementary in Fort Bend ISD; Fathima Noordeen, Malala Elementary in Fort Bend ISD (Rookie TOY); and Megan Proulx, Kingwood Middle School in Humble ISD.
